Excess body fat can lead to health problems, including increasing your risk of developing:

  • Type 2 diabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • Osteoarthritis

Fat loss is also a goal for bodybuilders during cutting phases. Fat loss takes hard work but there are supplements that can help you to reach your goals faster. As more fat loss products enter the supplement market, it becomes more confusing deciphering the good from the bad. This leads to expensive trial and error which can prove frustrating and time consuming. This guide takes you, step by step, through fat loss supplements to help you make the right choices.

The history of Fat Loss products

In the past 'miracle' fat loss pills claimed to drop massive amounts of weight with no exercise. Did they work? No, they either proved dangerous or ineffective. Today however, things have changed. Governments have tightened regulations and more research is carried out on ingredients. Now fat loss products can be used safely and effectively to help you shed fat.

What are Fat Loss products?

If you want to lose weight you need to burn more energy than you eat. It's that simple. Fat loss products can help you achieve this. Fat loss supplements are classified by the action they have on the body. They all have their role in maintaining a leaner, healthier and toned physique. They can increase fat loss by:

  • Releasing fat from the body as heat in a process called thermogenesis
  • Increasing your metabolism
  • Stimulating your central nervous system
  • Suppressing appetite
  • Reducing excess water storage

Most products contain a blend of ingredients to produce several fat loss effects. The individual ingredients will be discussed in "How Fat Loss products aid Fat Loss".

How Fat Loss products aid Fat Loss

Fat loss products can work in various ways to increase the rate of fat lost during a well balanced nutritional and exercise regime.

Thermogenesis

Thermogenesis is the process where the body burns excess calories in the form of heat

Thermogenic ingredients induce a process called thermogenesis. Thermogenesis is the process where the body burns excess calories in the form of heat.

Thermogenic ingredients:

  • Bitter Orange (citrus aurantium)
  • Green tea extract
  • Caffeine

Stimulants

Stimulants increase or activate the central nervous system (CNS). This stimulates the release of adrenaline to increase your metabolism and therefore burn more calories.

Stimulant ingredients:

  • Caffeine
  • Green tea
  • Guarana
  • L-tyrosine

Non-stimulants

Non-stimulants can act in a variety of ways to reduce body fat. These include controlling blood sugar, using fat as an energy source and appetite suppression.

Non-stimulant ingredients:

  • Chromium
  • L-Carnitine
  • CLA
  • Picolinate
  • Guggulsterones

What's in your Fat Loss supplement?

Fat loss products usually contain several ingredients to increase fat loss. Here are the most commonly used ingredients and why they are in your product.

Green Tea Extract

All teas come from the same tea plant, the difference is how they are picked and fermented. Unlike your standard cup of PG tips, Green Tea is unfermented, dry tea.

Polyphenols, particularly Epigallocatechin Gallate (EGCG) are responsible for most of green teas role in promoting health. Polyphenols support weight loss by thermogenesis. Green tea also contains vitamins, minerals and caffeine to stimulate your metabolism.

Therefore, fat Loss formulas that contain standardized extracts of polyphenols, particularly EGCG, give you the effects of drinking several cups of green tea.

Other health benefits of green tea include:

Governments have tightened regulations and more research is carried out on ingredients. Now fat loss products can be used safely and effectively to help you shed fat

  • Reduced cholesterol2,3
  • Improve cardio-vascular health, such as protection against atherosclerosis
  • Anti cancer effect4,5
  • Boosted immune system

L-Tyrosine

L-tyrosine is a nonessential amino acid that the body synthesizes from phenylalanine. L-Tyrosine is the precursor of several neurotransmitters, including adrenaline and noradrenaline. Due to this, L-tyrosine may play a role in speeding up your metabolism. Vitamin B6 converts L-tyrosine into the precursors that are often added in products containing L-Tyrosine.

Chromium

Chromium or Chromium Picolinate, is an essential mineral. It regulates carbohydrate and fat metabolism to maintain normal blood sugar levels. Chromium reduces body fat and increases lean body mass to aid weight loss6,7. A review in 2003 concluded that chromium plays a role in weight loss8.

Guarana Extract & Theobromine

The herb Guarana contains caffeine that is known to stimulate the central nervous system and increase metabolic rate. Guarana contains Theobromine that reduces appetite and increases weight loss.

Citrus Aurantium or Bitter Orange

Citrus Aurantium contains several substances known to stimulate metabolic rate to increase calorie burning. It has also been shown to suppress appetite. The action of Citrus aurantium is improved in combination with St Johns Wort and caffeine9.

Cayenne Pepper

Cayenne pepper increases the body's heat production through thermogenesis and boosts the breakdown of fat and carbohydrates. Cayenne also stimulates the sympathetic nervous system that aids in appetite suppression10.

L-Carnitine

L-carnitine is made in the body from the amino acids lysine and methionine. L-carnitine is important in fat and carbohydrate breakdown so may aid fat loss by burning body fat.

CLA

Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) is a naturally occurring fatty acid that contains no stimulants. CLA may help to reduce body fat and increase muscle mass. It reduces fat storage after meals and helps to increase the breakdown of fat during exercise. Research supports the long term use of CLA in effectively reducing body fat levels11,12

Sida Cordifolia

Sida Cordifolia is a herbal supplement extracted from the Sida Cordifolia plant. It aids in fat loss by stimulating the central nervous system. Sida cordifolia also has diuretic properties so can reduce excess water weight and retention. Sida Cordifolia is commonly used by bodybuilders and athletes for superior performance and leaner bodies.

Guggulsterones

Guggulsterones are processed and purified from Guggul tree sap to the active ingredients Z and E Guggulsterone. Guggulsterones stimulate the thyroid gland to increase your metabolic rate. This allows you to burn more energy during the day without stimulating the central nervous system. Research agrees that Guggulsterone used with regular exercise results in weight loss13.

How to use Fat Loss products

Stimulants or thermogenics should be taken 30-40 minutes prior to exercise to increase the release of free fatty acids. Total daily intake may vary dependent on the manufacture and ingredients, so follow the recommended doses. Stimulants should not be taken within 4 hours of your bedtime as they may disturb your sleep.

Appetite suppressants are best taken around an hour before mealtime.

Types of Fat Loss products

Fat loss products work in various ways to increase fat loss. SNC categorize fat loss formulas into 3 main categories:

  • Fat and weight loss
  • Non-stimulant fat and weight loss
  • Diuretics

Fat and Weight Loss

These products contain a range of ingredients in different quantities and strengths. This means that the needs of everyone are covered, from weight loss enthusiasts to bodybuilders. They mainly contain thermogenic and stimulant ingredients and may include ingredients that control blood sugar and appetite. More specialty fat loss products for bodybuilders contain diuretics to reduce extracellular fluid.

Non-stimulant fat and weight loss

Non-stimulants contain no caffeine or central nervous system stimulating ingredients. They can come in several forms and act in a variety of ways to reduce body fat including; controlling blood sugar levels, promoting fat used as energy source and appetite suppression.

Potential adverse effects of Fat Loss products

The ingredients sold in the UK at this time are safe for the greater proportion of the public, however if you are receiving any medication or have a pre-existing medical condition, then always consult your doctor.

It is recommended that you avoid thermogenic or stimulant fat loss products if you suffer from heart conditions, thyroid disease or high blood pressure.

Stimulants and thermogenic products in excess will supply too much caffeine that may cause nervousness, irritability, sleeplessness, muscle tremor, headache, light-headedness, mild delirium, rapid heartbeat, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach pain.
